A pergola is somewhat like a gazebo, but it’s a permanent structure.
They’re essentially composed of beams and posts which form an open framework over an area in your garden.
It’s a tricky one for sure! It’s pronounced a few different ways. Puh-Guh-Luh and Per-Go-La are the most common. Either is fine! We’ll know what you mean.
You typically don’t need planning permission for a pergola in the UK if it’s a freestanding structure in your back garden, no taller than 2.5 metres when close to a boundary (or up to 3 metres elsewhere), and doesn’t take up more than 50% of your outdoor space when combined with other buildings. As long as it’s open-sided with a slatted or non-solid roof, and your property isn’t listed or in a conservation area, it’s usually covered under permitted development rights.
That’s the beauty of pergolas, it’s completely up to you what you do with it! Some people use them to provide shelter for an outdoor living space, for some they just look nice. They’re very versatile for whatever you want.
The key difference between the two is that gazebos generally have a permanent roof canopy, whilst pergolas have a roof canopy that can be opened.
A traditional pergola has a fixed roof made of beams or slats. It offers partial shade and is mainly a decorative structure that defines an outdoor area. It offers partial shade.
